Chances are you have a consumer-grade wireless router at home and it works pretty well for you.  This might lead you to question if top-of-the-line enterprise class networking is really necessary, or are you just paying for the brand name.  When it comes to mission-critical networks, you will end up getting what you pay for.

For a features standpoint, the consumer-grade or lower-tier "professional-grade" gear often offer more bells and whistles than the high-end, purpose-driven equipment.  The idea is to sell the sizzle, hoping that you won't notice the beef is chuck steak vs. Kobe.  Marketers through out lots of acronyms and talk about how fast their solution can operate, etc. so when you do a side-by-side comparison it is hard to tell any difference between different solutions.

While both a high-end Cisco access point and a budget vendor access point may be certified to run the same data rates, the big difference is how reliably they do so.  When a small group of users are connected and requesting small amounts of data, both solutions work just fine.  But when hundreds of users are simultaneous connected transmitting thousands of packets and Gigabytes of data, that is when the cheaper solutions fail.  And they fail at the worst possible moment.

So when choosing a solution, first understand how it will be used.  If it is an amenitiy, then you can probably save some money, however if you cannot afford for your network to fail, a highly-reliable system will be a necessary investment.
